High Arch (Pes Cavus) Conditions and Treatments to Ease Pain

Foot Condition – High Arches (Pes Cavus)

High arches (pes cavus) occur when your foot arch is much higher than what might be considered a normal foot arch. It’s less common than other foot arch types, like flat feet. Typically, people have curved feet with a medium-height arch that slightly drops when you put weight on your foot. If you have high arches, your foot may not have the flexibility and drop.
If you have a pes cavus foot type, your arch remains very high when you walk. This means that extra weight is put on your heels and the balls of your feet as they take most of the impact when you walk. Because of this, your feet may hurt, or you may feel a cramp in your arch after standing or moving.
Pes cavus can be present at any age and lead to various high arch foot symptoms, including pain and instability.

Pes Cavus Causes

Many people are born with high arches, inherited from family. If you’re born with pes cavus, the appearance of the foot arch doesn’t usually change.
There are also medical conditions that can cause you to develop pes cavus foot as they progress. They are often muscular or neurological conditions that cause your foot to contract into a cavus or high-arched position.

Some of these conditions include the following:

If your cavus or high arched foot is due to a neurological disorder or other medical condition, assessment and management of symptoms is important.

Pes Cavus Symptoms

Pes cavus symptoms vary depending on your family history or whether you developed it through a cavus foot neurological disorder. The height of your foot arch helps determine if you have pes cavus.

Pes cavus symptoms include:

Pes Cavus Treatment

If you’re wondering how to manage pain associated with your high arches, our LMC Chiropodists have treatment options available. Finding what would work best for you, depends on factors like how severe your symptoms are, how many you have and just how much flexibility your foot has.
LMC Chiropodists commonly prescribe custom foot orthotic devices and recommend specific footwear and/or shoe modifications. Recommendations provide you with foot stability, cushioning and pain relief.

Orthotics

LMC Chiropodists design custom orthotics to provide additional cushioning support and help keep your feet in a more favourable and comfortable foot arch position. These custom foot orthotics are designed especially for your feet, allowing for support and cushion when you stand, walk, play sports or going about your day. If you have complications with Achilles Tendonitis or Tendinosis, temporary modifications like a heel lift can be incorporated into your custom orthotics.

Proper Footwear

In addition to custom orthotics, you need proper footwear with the right amount of arch support and cushion. Look for shoes with a supportive midsole to help with your high arch foot problem.

Other things to look for when choosing proper footwear can include:
