Corns and Calluses Conditions and Treatments to Remove Them

Skin Condition – Corns and Calluses

Corns and calluses are hard, thick areas of skin usually found on your feet.

      Corns

Corns are usually small and round and commonly appear on the top or side of your toes. Some people experience painful corns because of the location and contact with shoes.
There are different types of corns on your foot:

      Calluses

Calluses are hard patches of skin that are larger than corns. You most likely will find them on the bottom of your foot on bony areas that carry your weight, like your heel, big toe, ball of your foot and the sides of your foot. You may experience painful calluses, especially on the ball of your foot, when standing for a while walking or doing activities.

      Causes for Corns and Calluses

Corns and calluses can have similar causes. Some include:

      Symptoms of Corns and Calluses

Corns and calluses have common symptoms, including hardened areas of skin where you experience repeated friction or pressure, pain, redness or blisters. They can be tender to touch or walk, stand on.

In addition to hardened skin, you may also experience:

      Some specific foot callus symptoms

      You may experience the following:

      Treatment for Corns or Calluses

Treatment options depend on your symptoms and what initially caused your corn or callus. Your foot corn causes or how your callus developed are assessed to determine the best treatment options.
LMC Chiropodists typically recommend routine visits with us, custom orthotics, footwear advice and home care between visits.

Corn or callus care for those with diabetes, those prone to infections or with poor circulation
Don’t try to treat corns or calluses on your own before seeking treatment if you have diabetes, poor circulation or are prone to infections.

      Routine Visits with Your Chiropodist

LMC Chiropodists provide services to promote healthy feet to reduce the likelihood of worsening symptoms or for prevention. Proper care is essential for preventing and treating corns and calluses.

In some cases, our Chiropodist may debride the area and remove the corn or callus using a scalpel. Some people try this at home, which is not recommended as it can lead to infection.
Chiropodists are highly skilled in using instruments to remove corns and calluses. This treatment is often pain free and patients walk out little to no pain left! Some patients may require prescription topical medication between visits. Your Chiropodist will discuss your treatment options and protocol that suits your needs and health history.

      Custom Orthotics

In some cases, the way you walk can cause foot corns and calluses. Custom orthotics can help correct how you walk and reduce the high-pressure areas on the feet.
Orthotics can also improve your balance and make walking more efficient. When your orthotics are placed inside appropriately fitted shoes, they increase comfort and reduce the severity of your corns and calluses.

      Proper Footwear Advice

Proper footwear is essential to keeping your feet healthy and reducing the likelihood of worsening symptoms or recurrence.

Some typical footwear recommendations may include:

      Homecare In Between Visits

Between your visits with your LMC Chiropodist, doing some corn and callus care at home may reduce your healing time.

Some things you can do at home:
