Plantar Wart Conditions and Treatments That Work

      Skin Condition – Plantar Wart

A plantar wart is a small growth. It usually appears at the bottom of your toes, heel, ball of your foot or between toes. Often, warts can cluster on the balls or heels of your feet. The cluster can create a lot of pressure which can cause pain. The cluster can also cause callus to form, which is a hard layer of skin. This can make daily activities difficult as callus can be very painful.
Plantar warts can only be found on feet. Warts on the hands, are called palmer warts, not plantar warts on the hands. The medical term for planter wart is known as a verrucae or verrucae pedis.
Although most plantar warts aren’t considered serious and go away without treatment, especially for those especially under the age of 12, they can spread easily and form clusters.

      Plantar Wart Causes

Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) infection causes a plantar wart. The warts form when the virus enters the skin layers through small cuts on the bottom of your feet. HPV is a very common virus that can come in different forms.
The strains of HPV that cause a plantar wart aren’t very contagious, so catching it depends on your immune system’s response to the virus. This means not everyone who comes into contact with the virus develops warts. This means not everyone who lives in the same household will contract a planter’s wart even if exposed to it.
The virus thrives in warm, moist places, so you might get it by walking barefoot in locker rooms, swimming pools or other damp public areas.

Who’s most likely to catch it:

      Plantar Wart Symptoms

      Some plantar wart symptoms include:

      Plantar Wart Treatment

When plantar warts cause pain, you may change the way you stand, walk, or run which can cause muscle or joint discomfort. Plantar wart treatment is necessary if the wart doesn’t go away to prevent spreading. Treatment options can depend on the size and location of the wart, as well as age, comfort levels and medical history of the patient.

      Topical Medicament Application

In office high strength acids can be applied by your Chiropodist to treat the wart. A blister is formed around the wart and the tissue is debrided by your Chiropodist within a week to determine if the wart is still there, or repeat treatment is needed. Your Chiropodist can also prescribe at home topical medication to be used between visits. This helps to manage the growth of the wart with regular debridement with your provider.

      Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a procedure where liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the wart. The freezing causes a blister around the wart. The tissue would be debrided by your Chiropodist within a week to determine if the wart is still there, or repeat treatment is needed.

      Needling

Your Chiropodist can remove the wart by using a needle to elicit an immune response by your own body. This method is done under local anesthetic but there can be pain once it wears off. Care is taken to determine if this treatment is right for you, as the size and location of the wart may mean this treatment is not right for you.

      Excision

Surgical excision of plantar warts is a procedure where the wart is removed from the foot completely using a small curette. This method is done under local anesthetic, but there can be pain once it wears off. Care is taken to determine if this treatment is right for you, as the size and location of the wart may mean this treatment is not right for you.
