Sever’s Disease Conditions and Treatments to Ease Pain

Foot Pain – Sever’s Disease (Heel Pain in Children)

Sever’s Disease (calcaneal apophysitis) is a common condition that causes heel pain in children and adolescents, usually aged 8 to 14. It’s an injury to the growth plate on the heel bone. Growth plates are the cartilage between the bones in children and adolescents, that eventually turns into bone as the child gets older.
Server’s Disease typically occurs due to strenuous exercise that stresses the heel bone. This is due to the the Achilles tendon as it connects the calf muscle to the growth plate at the back of the heel. Severe’s Disease can be present until your child is fully grown. Once the growth plates close, the condition resolves itself.
Some children need treatment for their Sever’s Disease heel pain symptoms.

      Common Causes of Sever’s Disease

Children can develop Sever’s Disease during a growth spurt when the muscles, tendons, bones, and cartilage quickly grow. While this happens, they tend to be more vulnerable to injury. Because bones can grow faster than muscle, especially in your foot, the Achilles tendon can become tight at certain points in your child’s physical development.
If your child is experiencing heel pain from Sever’s Disease, there can be a few causes, including:

      Sever’s Disease Symptoms

Children can experience mild pain or discomfort symptoms at the back of the heel bone, especially when they’re active.
Some symptoms children report experiencing with Sever’s Disease include:

      Sever’s Disease Treatment

Symptoms of Sever’s Disease often improve with rest and other minor adjustments. However, it may take a few months for symptoms to disappear completely, especially for very active children.
LMC Chiropody may recommend orthotics and proper footwear for Sever’s Disease treatment depending on the cause if your child is experiencing severe heel pain.

      Orthotics

Custom orthotics can help children with flat feet, or high arches manage Server’s Disease symptoms. Orthotics will stabilize the foot’s position, reducing stress in the heel.
Orthotics can also help reduce stress caused by a tightened Achilles tendon.

      Proper Footwear

Wearing proper footwear can improve your child’s heel pain.
