      Uses and Benefits of
      Compression Socks or Stockings

      Compression Socks and Compression
      Stockings

What are Compression Socks or Stockings (Compression Hose)?

Compression socks and compression stockings are snug-fitting, stretchy socks or stockings that gently squeeze your foot or leg.

Compression stockings are elastic stockings that support healthy blood circulation. The pressure they put on your ankles and legs compresses the arteries and veins. Compression socks help the valves in your veins to function better, so the blood flows back to your heart without much difficulty. Lengths range from knee high, to thigh-high and as high as pantyhose or waist.

Compression socks, also called pressure socks by some people, aid to support healthy blood circulation for your calves, ankles and feet. You can either have ankle-length or knee-high socks.

They help manage varicose veins, spider veins and edema (swelling) and keep your legs from getting tired and achy.

Who Needs Compression Socks or Stockings?

Some common conditions that require compression socks or stockings include the following.
Compression socks for women who are pregnant also help with swelling and reduce occurrence of varicose veins. You may also need to wear them if you work on your feet, sit, or travel for long periods.

      Types of Compression Socks

Compression socks and stockings are available in different levels of compression. They should be tightest around the middle of your foot and ankle, and the tightness should gradually decrease higher up your leg.

Compression socks or stockings are available in a variety of lengths and styles. Knee-high is the most common length worn, but there are also thigh-high, pantyhose, or single-leg options. They are available in a variety of materials, colours, and patterns.

When being assessed and fitted at LMC, you can be sure our Chiropodists take the time to review your medical history to make sure compression therapy is right for you. Our Chiropodists are able to complete their history and assessments to feel and listen for your pulses, complete an Ankle Brachial Index test (ABI) as well as other tests, you will not have done when buying socks over the counter or online. An ABI takes the blood pressure of your ankle and arm and compares it. Depending on the number, your Chiropodist can make sure compression therapy is right for you. Our team is also able to contact your family doctor or LMC Endocrinologist to determine if further tests are needed based on this assessment. Our Chiropodists measure your legs and feet to ensure a great fit, while discussing length and style options you will be happy to wear. When it’s time to take home your compression socks, our Chiropodists show you how to put them on, take them off and go over home washing care instructions with you. Booking routine follow ups to determine the need for new socks or require sizing down is also part of our compression therapy plan.

      Compression Socks Benefits

LMC Specialists recommend compression stockings or socks as an effective treatment to help manage edema, varicose veins or spider veins that aren’t complicated.

Putting on compression stockings in the morning is best, as that is when our legs have less edema. This helps in assisting the valves in your veins to function well to support healthy circulation in your legs during the day.

Other examples of benefits include the following:

Sitting at a desk or travelling for long periods:

Wearing compression socks if you work at a desk or travel for long periods can help reduce blood pooling in your feet and lower legs. It also reduces your risk of developing edema, varicose veins, or spider veins.

Working on your feet for long hours:

If you have a job where you are on your feet for extended periods, compression socks can benefit you by preventing lower leg blood pooling and reducing feelings of fatigue and discomfort,

      Pregnancy:

Compression stockings for women who are pregnant help with leg tiredness and swelling and help prevent varicose veins from developing. Full compression hose styles are commonly worn.

      Post-Surgery:

You may also be required to wear compression stockings after surgery for some conditions, such as varicose veins. Some people may refer to them as surgical stockings.

What Are The Best Compression Socks?

The best compression socks depend on the reason you need them. You may find the ones without a prescription fine for your needs.

Medical compression stockings or socks may be needed for some of the conditions listed above, like edema, varicose or spider veins, pregnancy, chronic venous insufficiency, and lymphedema.  Although it can seem difficult to apply compression socks or take them off, most patients can get them on without much difficulty in 30 seconds or less!
