Toenail Fungus Conditions and Treatments
Nail Condition – Toenail Fungus
Onychomycosis, otherwise known as a fungal nail infection is common. A mild toenail fungus may produce no symptoms or very few. In the early stages, your nail may lose its shiny appearance, and you may notice a white, yellow or brown spot under the tip of your nail.
As the nail infection progresses, your nail may appear discoloured, thickened and crumble at the edges. A toenail infection can affect one or several nails.
Toenail Fungus Causes
Fungal infections can spread from contact with moist spaces where fungi can thrive, such as a locker room, swimming pool areas, or sweaty, damp shoes. A toenail infection is often accompanied by athlete’s foot (a foot fungal infection). Athlete’s foot can spread to your nails, and fungal nails can spread to your foot.
Some causes of toe fungus include:
- Wearing shoes that make your feet heavily sweat.
- Previously experiencing athlete’s foot.
- Walking barefoot in moist public areas, like locker rooms, swimming pools and fitness studios.
- Having a skin condition that affects your nails, like psoriasis.
- Having nail injuries or ingrown nails.
Toenail Fungus Symptoms
Some symptoms you may experience with toenail fungus include:
- Thick toenails.
- Nails that are discoloured. They may appear yellow or brown.
- Brittle, crumbly and/or ridged-looking nails.
- Nails that are partially separated from the nail bed.
- Nails that have an odour.
- Bleeding or swelling around your infected nail.
- Pain that may make it difficult to walk.

Proper footwear is essential for keeping your nails and feet healthy and reducing the likelihood of worsening symptoms or recurrence.
Some typical footwear recommendations may include:
- Wear footwear that fits properly with enough room in the toe area of the shoe or boot.
- Wear shoes made of breathable materials.
Homecare In Between Visits
Between your visits with your LMC Chiropodist, doing some nail and foot maintenance at home may reduce your healing time.
Some things you can do at home:
- Regularly trim your toenails straight across, not curved at the edge.
- Ensure that your shoes and socks are not too tight.
- Keep your nails clean and dry.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after touching your infected nail.
- Wear footwear in public swimming pools, fitness centres and locker rooms.
