Thick Toenails Conditions and Treatments
Nail Condition – Thick Toenail
A thick toenail appears bulkier and sometimes more yellow than other nails on your feet. The affected nail(s) can look unsightly and/or cause pain or discomfort. If left untreated, thick toenails can worsen and cause pain.
There are many causes for thick toenails, but a fungal nail infection is the most common.
Causes for Thick Toenails
There are quite a few reasons for toenails to thicken. But the most common cause is a fungal nail infection called onychomycosis.
Some people are more prone to foot or toe fungus than others. Some of the leading causes of a nail infection include:
- Walking barefoot in moist areas like public swimming pools or locker rooms.
- If you’re a smoker.
- Wearing footwear that’s too tight.
- Athlete’s foot, damage to, or next to the nail.
- Health conditions such as Psoriasis, Diabetes, immune deficiencies, or circulatory problems.
- A foot injury or if you regularly perform an intense activity, such as soccer, running, and dancing.
- Yellow nail syndrome, which causes the nails to yellow and become curved and thickened.
- Aging.
- Ingrown nails.
Thick Toenail Symptoms
You may not notice you have thick toenails in the early stages. However, as the thickness appears more prominent, you may experience one or more symptoms, including:
- Nails that appear rough, ribbed, or scaly on the top.
- Brittle nails that are easy to break.
- Your nails easily split or crack.
- Nails that lift easily from your nail bed or may not seem completely attached to it.
- An odour coming from the nail.
- Nails that may appear yellow, green or brown in colour.
- Toenail pain or discomfort.
- It becomes difficult to cut or trim your nails.

Proper Footwear Advice
Proper footwear is essential for keeping your nails and feet healthy and reducing the likelihood of worsening symptoms or recurrence.
Some typical footwear recommendations may include:
- Wear footwear that fits properly with enough room in the toe area of the shoe or boot.
- Don’t walk barefoot in moist public places such as swimming pools or locker rooms. It reduces your risk of getting a toe fungal infection, which leads to thick toenails.
- Wear the appropriate footwear for your sport or exercise, for example, cleats for soccer or running shoes for runners.
- Wear protective footwear if your activities put you at risk of injuring your toes.
Homecare In Between Visits
Between your visits with your LMC Chiropodist, doing some nail and foot maintenance at home may reduce your healing time.
Some things you can do at home:
- Ensure that your shoes fit properly.
- Keep your socks and shoes dry.
- Keep your feet clean and dry.
