Nail Condition – Ingrown Toenail
An ingrown toenail is a common condition in which the corners of the toenail grow into the surrounding tissue. Commonly, it affects the big toe. The toe becomes swollen and tender. Left untreated, it may become increasingly painful and red and eventually could lead to infection.
The surrounding skin can potentially grow over the ingrown toenail. If infection is present, and left untreated, there is a potential for it to spread.
A fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) can increase the probability of developing ingrown nails.
If you have diabetes or another condition that causes poor blood circulation, you’re at greater risk of complications of ingrown toenails.
Ingrown Toenail Causes
There are quite a few causes of ingrown toenails. Some include:
- Wearing shoes that crowd the toenails.
- Cutting your nails too short or rounding the corners. Both encourage your nails to grow into the skin.
- Having very curved toenails.
- Injuring your toenail.
- Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis)
- Certain medical conditions like diabetes, severe nerve damage in the leg or foot or poor blood circulation.
- If your feet tend to sweat more, which softens the nail and skin.
- Having a reduced capacity to care for your nails due to mobility or illness-related concerns.
Ingrown Toenail Symptoms
Some ingrown toenail symptoms include:
- Pain and tenderness around the toe area while wearing socks or shoes
- Inflamed (swollen) skin around the nail.
- Yellow or thick drainage from the nail corner, which could mean infection.
- Redness around the nail that looks to be spreading

- Softening the skin and lifting the edge of the nail from the skin. The corner is then propped up over the skin’s edge until your skin heals.
- Removing the offending nail edge to allow the pus to drain and skin the heal.
- Partial and full toenail removal.

Proper Footwear Advice
Proper footwear is essential for keeping your nails and feet healthy and reducing the likelihood of worsening symptoms or recurrence.
Some typical footwear recommendations may include:
- Wear footwear that fits properly with enough room in the toe area of the shoe or boot.
- Shoes that place too much pressure on your toes or pinch them may cause a nail to grow into the surrounding tissue.
- Wear protective footwear if your activities put you at risk of injuring your toes.
Homecare In Between Visits
Between your visits with your LMC Chiropodist, doing some nail and foot maintenance at home may reduce your healing time.
Some things you can do at home:
- Regularly trim your toenails straight across, not curved at the edge.
- Ensure that your shoes and socks are not too tight.
- Keep your feet clean and dry.
