Bunion Conditions and Treatments For Pain

      Foot Condition - Bunion

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a growth of the big toe joint. Frequently, bunions cause that joint to bulge out, pushing the big toe to point towards the second toe.
A minor bunion may not cause many symptoms and treating them as you see early signs of bunions can help you prevent further complications.

      Common Causes of Bunions

Bunion causes are varied and include some of the following:

      Some Bunion Symptoms

While some do not experience any symptoms other than the growth itself, others can experience some or all of the following:

      Bunion Treatments

Bunion treatments vary based on the severity and placement of your bunions. Expert LMC Chiropodists assess a variety of medical factors to provide the best option(s). Some of the options include, bunion aligners, orthotics, and proper footwear.

      Bunion Aligners

Bunion aligners help straighten the big toe to slow down further bunion growth, allowing you to move more easily. Aligners can be easy to wear in shoes, or some can be worn at night in bed. They are often needed in conjunction with footwear and custom orthotics.

      Orthotics

Custom-made orthotics for bunions aid to support the foot in a more optimal position. Orthotics are a long-term solution to slow down bunion progression and may also be prescribed after surgery to help control and correct the foot mechanics that originally caused the problem.

      Proper Footwear

Essential to bunion treatment, wearing shoes to keep your feet stable is important. LMC Chiropodists often recommend therapeutic and orthopaedic shoes to create stability. Wearing properly fitting shoes with enough width will help reduce the chance of a bunion reforming.

      FAQ

      Top questions we get asked

We answer the top questions our foot clinic gets asked.

Bunions can develop due to inherited foot structure, arthritis, or wearing tight, narrow shoes that crowd the toes. Over time, the pressure and misalignment can worsen the deformity.

Common symptoms include pain, redness, swelling, and difficulty wearing shoes comfortably. Some people also experience calluses or corns where the big toe rubs against the second toe.

Treatment can include changing footwear, using padding, splints or toe spacers, bunion aligners, taking pain relievers, and wearing

Yes! Custom orthotics can help reduce the strain placed upon the big toe by supporting proper foot alignment and distributing pressure more evenly across the foot. They can also relieve pain by reducing stress on the affected joint.
