Achilles Tendinitis Conditions and Treatments to Stop Pain

Foot Condition โ€“ Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis also spelled tendonitis, is a severe Achilles tendon inflammation. The tendon is a cord of tissue connecting the back of your lower leg calf muscles to your heel bone. You use it when you walk, run, flex your foot, jump or stand on your toes. Itโ€™s a common problem in runners, dancers or people that play sports and work out.
Some other names you may have heard for it are Achilles tendinosis, calf tendonitis, Achilles tendinopathy and tendonitis lower leg.

Common Causes of Achilles Tendonitis

What causes Achilles tendonitis? The problem comes from repetitive stress on the tendon. This can happen when you push your body to do too much too fast.ย

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

The pain associated with Achilles tendinitis (tendonitis) usually begins as mild pain in the back of your leg or above the heel after running or other physical activity.ย ย

Common Achilles tendonitis symptoms include:

Achilles Tendonitis Treatmentย

Achilles tendonitis treatment options are relatively simple. Some include cortisone injections, orthotics, proper footwear, stretching, taping and topical ointments. Achilles tendonitis recovery time varies from person to person, but with consistency and following your Chiropodistโ€™s recommended treatments, recovery time can reduce.

Orthotics

When you have Achilles tendonitis, your tendon feels swollen and painful. LMC Chiropodists may suggest wearing custom orthotics. They can provide complete support for your foot arch as customized shoe inserts. Orthotic shoe inserts are more effective when combined with shoes that also help support or cushion your foot type.

Proper Footwearย

Achilles tendinitis is often helped by wearing specific shoes. Open-back shoes and soft shoes can reduce tendon irritation. A heel temporary pad insert may also help. For severe pain, LMC Chiropodists may recommend a walking boot. The boot gives the tendon a chance to rest before you start therapy. Itโ€™s only recommended for the short term because it can weaken the calf muscle over time.

Stretching

Keeping flexibility in your ankle joint is essential. Stretching the Achilles tendon before and after you exercise or at the start of the day will help.
Keeping your calf muscle flexible helps avoid the recurrence of Achilles tendinitis. Take the time to stretch them and your tendon in the morning, before and after exercise, to maintain flexibility.

Taping

LMC Chiropodists may recommend taping techniques to treat and prevent Achilles tendon injuries and support and reduce stress on your Achilles tendon, calf and front of the ankle joint during activity. They can be used to treat and prevent Achilles tendon injuries.

Topical Ointments for Painย

Anti-inflammatory medication applied topically as a gel is used to treat Achilles tendonitis. Topical anti-inflammatory medications may help when inflammation is causing pain.

Cortisone Injections

Cortisone is a steroid and strong anti-inflammatory medication for Achilles tendinitis or other Achilles tendon problems. Limited walking and activity is necessary after a cortisone injection, and your Chiropodist will be able to help you decide if this treatment is right for you. Other injectables, such as platelet-rich plasma, are being studied for Achilles tendinitis.
