Plantar Warts Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options
WHAT ARE PLANTAR WARTS?
Warts are skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a viral infection. They can appear on any part of the body and vary in size, shape, and appearance. Warts are generally harmless but can be contagious and multiply quickly and may cause discomfort.
WHAT DO PLANTAR WARTS LOOK LIKE?
Plantar warts are most commonly found on the soles of the feet, they have a raised skin surface with a rough texture.
HOW DID I BECOME INFECTED WITH A PLANTAR WART?
Plantar warts are acquired by a transfer of the virus. This most typically is caused by skin-to-skin contact or touching our bare feet to surfaces that have the virus. One example is pool decks.
WHY DO PLANTAR WARTS HURT?
Plantar warts grow inward, they can cause pain with walking or activities as you place your weight on the growth.
ARE THERE TREATMENTS FOR PLANTAR WARTS?
There are many effective treatment options for Plantar Warts. The LMC Footcare team will assess and determine which of the following options can best treat your plantar wart(s):
- 1. Gels, Creams, and Patches: Salicylic acid is a gentle topical treatment approach which gradually breaks down the wart tissue. As well, creams and ointments containing ingredients like imiquimod, can also be used to stimulate the immune system to target and eliminate the wart.
- 2. Cryotherapy: Cryotherapy involves freezing the wart using liquid nitrogen. The freezing causes the wart tissue to die, and the wart eventually falls off. Cryotherapy is a common and effective treatment, especially for stubborn warts. Multiple sessions may be required for complete removal.
- 3. Prescription Medications: Some patients may require stronger topical medications containing ingredients like higher concentrations of salicylic acid or other compounds for more aggressive treatment.
- 4. Needling: Needling involves pushing a tiny needle into the wart to a certain depth thereby triggering an immune response. This allows your body to recognize and eliminate the virus causing the wart. This is an effective treatment when multiple viruses are present.
